IEN Teaching Garden

IEN Giikinoo-amaage-gidiwin Gitigaan

April is a busy month in the garden as most of the vegetable seedlings have been started and tending to them indoors until the chance of freeze passes. Here in the north, starting seeds indoors is a necessary season extension practice. This year we expiremented with a new indoor seed starting method which some are dubbing the “snail” method. Although our amazing supervisor Simone, calls them spirls which is fitting and nicer sounding.

Earlier this month, a group of youth from a local charter school (Voyageurs, Bemidji MN) came to help us with the build of the new garden expansion, which will help to accommodate more food sovereignty to the local community. The students also built and installed a free food shelf on site for the community to use.

We also built a second community composting system and place some garden boxes.

Looking forward into May, the first week we will be picking up two honey bee colonies for our Solvanian Bee House. Sadly the two from last year did not make it through this wild winter.

Climate change is really hard on bees. Shortly after the bees arrive we will be getting two big shipments of fruit trees and shrubs. We are planning a tree planting day once they arrive.

May Gitigaan Events:

Join us at Rail River Folk School in Bemidji to celebrate PRIDE IN THE ARTS on Saturday, May 11th from 4-8pm! This is a fundraiser event for Bemidji Pride, with a suggested donation of $5/person or $20/family.

On May 26th, our Gitigaan is the location for a big community event called Roots, Shoots and Seeds Celebration.

If you have extra seedlings, seeds bring them – and if you don’t we have plenty to share!

We’re going to make seed bombs! Toss those out in fields and empty city lots to support native bee habitat.

Come and enjoy talking with friends and neighbors at community tables.

Bring your feast bundles, listen to music, enjoy good food, and support the first community day of this season.
