When Indigenous Peoples and organizers are kicked out of the UNFCCC COP 25, the people rise up and find a vehicle for expression shown in this 15-minute documentary. The UNFCCC COP 25 in Madrid aimed to finalize the rules for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, a set of guidelines under which global carbon pricing systems will operate. The film demonstrates the stark contrast between the privileged corporate and government elites and those of Indigenous Peoples and organizers resisting Article 6 and other false solutions. Depicted through a diversity of Indigenous and international voices, the film warns us of the rebranding tactics used by corporations to commodify life and proliferate carbon pricing systems for the purpose of continuing business as usual.
Even after the UNFCCC virtual Intersessional conference ended last week, Article 6 continues to be negotiated. As Indigenous Peoples and organizers prepare for the upcoming COP 26 in Glasgow, Scotland, this 15-minute video, Distraction from Climate Action: Article 6 False Solutions, is a critical tool to educate, uplift and build resistance.

The UNFCCC security. They were so afraid of us that they wanted to get rid of us as soon as possible.

That’s something completely ridiculous. We spend months and months and months trying to get accreditation, trying to plan out things that happen inside here, but they refuse to listen to us.

Indigenous Peoples are the ones that are taking care of these lands and biodiversity, and protecting forests and protecting water.

Yet we’re not being listened to. We’re not being included in these conversations, and we are being lined up to march like animals with police around us. We should be inside there.

What is happening inside these meetings is that colonial governments are making agreements, to create carbon market mechanisms. We can not commodify our air, and we can not sell our forests to corporations, that are trying to continue business as usual and create fossil fuels and extractivism in our backyards, further perpetuating the marginalization of our Indigenous communities from our lands, territories, and rob us of our self-determination and sovereignty.

These carbon market mechanisms and “market-based solutions” to the climate crisis, do not actually reduce emissions. Instead what they are doing is allowing dirty corporations, to continue business as usual, growing emissions annually every single day, and destroying our ecosystems and lands worldwide.
Estos mecanismos del mercado de carbono así como las soluciones a la crisis climática “basadas en el mercado”, en realidad no reducen las emisiones. How can the UN pretend to have solutions, even the states, when they don’t even listen to the grassroots people, the grassroots communities, the Indigenous Peoples?
It’s impossible, you know because, we can no longer go on listening to them, and even not even listening, working with them.

We are here from different organizations this morning, and we are here to launch the “No to Carbon Markets Day.”

We sent a message out in 2015, at the signing of the Paris Accord, the [Paris] Agreement, that that’s going to be a crime against humanity and Mother Earth, because it was nothing but a trade instrument.

The United Nations, the governments of the world, the corporations, extractive industries, and some of our environmental organizations, who are here in this space, they want to use half of the world’s lands, Including Indigenous Peoples’ territories, and our small farmers, and our peasants’ farms, who are false solution to climate change called carbon offsets, carbon markets.

Carbon markets do not reduce global warming. Carbon offsets privatize Mother Earth and nature, including the air that we breathe, and they pretend to use the soils, our forests, our plantations, our agriculture, our ecosystems, as sponges for greenhouse gasses,
instead of cutting emissions.

At the United Nations they have been pedalling terms like “Net-Zero Emissions Targets,” “Nature-Based solutions” and pushing for carbon capture.

Basically all of these umbrella terms like “carbon pricing” and all of these systems that are embedded in Article 6, and seen as many domestic policies around the world [are] masking the fact that they are just pushing for old systems, like carbon offsets and carbon trading.

From the beginning –– before, they were just trying to commodify all life you know, “this trade and the environment, the bridge that we’re trying to create through greening the economy” ––It sounds beautiful. It sounds very rational. But at the end, it’s just commodification of life.

The majority of the Earth’s remaining forests and biodiversity is protected by Indigenous Peoples, who have protected forests and will continue to do so for thousands of years, but only if colonialist programs, like the ones that are being implemented and enshrined, in Article 6, do not interfere with that process.

We have evidence, so much evidence, that shows that since the World Bank, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change launched the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, or REDD programs in 2007, the communities have been massively impacted.

It’s outrageous that we have Indigenous People and even activists coming year after year, you know, doing their best to finance their trouble to be here, to organize side events, and we know that they (UNFCCC) won’t be listening.

We come to the United Nations seeking justice and all we see are false solutions like Article 6, where there is carbon trading where our women are not involved in the decision-making.

This COP, the 25th, we don’t see any good advancements. So maybe this coming week there’s going to be a little change, but we don’t see that much because even Article [6] around human rights, they are not even trying to, honor the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples, and we are the ones suffering the most, because we are on the frontlines. We are the ones who are taking care and we are the ones doing most of the work.
En esta COP, la 25, no vemos ningún avance. Article 6 False Solutions THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE INSIDE THE COP 25, DECEMBER 2019 IN MADRID, WHERE ARTICLE 6 WAS BEING NEGOTIATED. ARTICLE 6 SETS OUT THE RULES FOR A NEW GLOBAL CARBON PRICING SYSTEM. The best invention we’ve ever come up with is called a tree. We need to put a value on nature. So yes to economy. Yes to environment. And no there is no opposition. We have to make these two mash together. MEANWHILE, THOSE MOST IMPACTED BY THE CLIMATE CRISIS WERE PUSHED OUTSIDE… We want sustainable solutions. We want people-powered solutions. We want solutions that connect people to the ground. There’s a lot of devastation in communities in different landscapes across the world. People are dying every day for sins they did not commit. And we are here to say: No more corruption with our COP! We want the peoples’ voice to be heard. We want climate just solutions. We don’t want carbon markets. We want people-powered solutions. And that’s why we are calling on our governments, our COP, to listen to the voice of the people. That is why we are here. Hundreds of activists gathered to demand rich countries take more drastic action, to address the climate crisis. They have decided that they don’t want us there. They are debadging us. How can they? So what happened to your badge? They were not happy that I decided to help and join this movement, and they were not happy with what I had to say. They took my badge immediately and tried to throw me out. Who opened the garage door? The UNFCCC security. They were so afraid of us that they wanted to get rid of us as soon as possible. That’s something completely ridiculous. We spend months and months and months trying to get accreditation, trying to plan out things that happen inside here, but they refuse to listen to us. They refuse to listen to our voice and that is just blasphemy. Indigenous Peoples are the ones that are taking care of these lands and biodiversity, and protecting forests and protecting water. Yet we’re not being listened to. We’re not being included in these conversations, and we are being lined up to march like animals with police around us. We should be inside there. What is happening inside these meetings is that colonial governments are making agreements, to create carbon market mechanisms. We can not commodify our air, and we can not sell our forests to corporations, that are trying to continue business as usual and create fossil fuels and extractivism in our backyards, further perpetuating the marginalization of our Indigenous communities from our lands, territories, and rob us of our self-determination and sovereignty. These carbon market mechanisms and “market-based solutions” to the climate crisis, do not actually reduce emissions. Instead what they are doing is allowing dirty corporations, to continue business as usual, growing emissions annually every single day, and destroying our ecosystems and lands worldwide. How can the UN pretend to have solutions, even the states, when they don’t even listen to the grassroots people, the grassroots communities, the Indigenous Peoples? It’s impossible, you know because, we can no longer go on listening to them, and even not even listening, working with them. So when I see COP 25, it’s still like what it was 30 years ago. You have Indigenous People in side events and nobody comes to attend the side events. It’s bullshit, you know. It’s total bullshit. So it’s false solutions. When we say it’s false solutions, it’s real, you know. Because we are talking about finance. It’s business as usual. They just want to make money. Carbon markets have done nothing to slow down or stop our emissions. To think that this is being funded, this is being used, and portrayed by the UN as a solution is ludicrous. It is backwards. It is against science, and to think that these people are supposedly leaders –– it’s horrendous. It’s scary for us as people, as young people. Welcome to the fourth day of COP 25 here in Madrid. A COP 25 “SIDE EVENT” We are here from different organizations this morning, and we are here to launch the “No to Carbon Markets Day.” We sent a message out in 2015, at the signing of the Paris Accord, the [Paris] Agreement, that that’s going to be a crime against humanity and Mother Earth, because it was nothing but a trade instrument. The United Nations, the governments of the world, the corporations, extractive industries, and some of our environmental organizations, who are here in this space, they want to use half of the world’s lands, Including Indigenous Peoples’ territories, and our small farmers, and our peasants’ farms, who are false solution to climate change called carbon offsets, carbon markets. Carbon markets do not reduce global warming. Carbon offsets privatize Mother Earth and nature, including the air that we breathe, and they pretend to use the soils, our forests, our plantations, our agriculture, our ecosystems, as sponges for greenhouse gasses, instead of cutting emissions. That’s why we are concerned about this. We come from the belly of the beast, where there is an expansion, of forest and fossil fuel development so the greenwash that they are using is this “market-based solution”. So offsets corrupt the sacred. They corrupt the sacred. The planet-grab for carbon offsets, which may affect a billion people, has many names: “REDD,” “Nature-Based Solutions.” How is “Natural Climate Solutions” different from R-E-D-D, REDD, Reducing Emissions from [Deforestation and Degradation] How do they function––– No. Actually. Yeah. They are the same thing. FOR TWO DECADES, SOCIAL MOVEMENTS HAVE BEEN IN A NARRATIVE WAR WITH CORPORATIONS AND THEIR GOVERNMENT ALLIES. FALSE SOLUTIONS REBRANDING

REBRANDING CARBON PRICING NET-ZERO EMISSIONS TARGETS NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE BLUE CARBON ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES At the United Nations they have been pedalling terms like “Net-Zero Emissions Targets,” “Nature-Based solutions” and pushing for carbon capture. Basically all of these umbrella terms like “carbon pricing” and all of these systems that are embedded in Article 6, and seen as many domestic policies around the world [are] masking the fact that they are just pushing for old systems, like carbon offsets and carbon trading. This perpetuation and masking of these terms that are really just an old concept that we know doesn’t work. It continues a system of false solutions that they think that we don’t understand. But we understand very well what they are doing by rebranding the same old things, that haven’t worked in the first place. When I’m doing my day job and trying to work for companies to help them offset their carbon footprint, now, I’m not always dealing with the best carbon projects, not the most interesting, Sometimes stuff that we’ve seen in the market for a long, long time, and, and, and, people want an alternative. You’d be amazed if you put it in front of them, how, what the reaction would be to something that is in your area. So that’s a huge lesson from this, to get it out there and start to install the concept as soon as possible. Tomorrow I’ll be launching a very important announcement in terms of carbon emission trade-offs, et cetera, which we’re working on with the aviation sector. So we are now in the mode of action, action, action, providing tools of actual measurement, So who would have thought that the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), which someone described as the “grand old lady of business” would actually end up being a perky attitude-forward organization? That’s where we are. That’s The Climate Coalition. And that’s the fun we’re going to have because it’s a positive variant for change, and the business community is all in. Thank you. From the beginning –– before, they were just trying to commodify all life you know, “this trade and the environment, the bridge that we’re trying to create through greening the economy” ––It sounds beautiful. It sounds very rational. But at the end, it’s just commodification of life. So the projects like REDD+ and others alike, commodifying nature, commodifying the forests, It’s not a good solution, because they are privatizing life. It’s another mechanism just to take over. So instead of taking over, we need to take care. Give care for life. The majority of the Earth’s remaining forests and biodiversity is protected by Indigenous Peoples, who have protected forests and will continue to do so for thousands of years, but only if colonialist programs, like the ones that are being implemented and enshrined, in Article 6, do not interfere with that process. We have evidence, so much evidence, that shows that since the World Bank, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change launched the, Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, or REDD programs in 2007, the communities have been massively impacted. Some of the impacts include the loss of rights, loss of forest entry and use, deforestation, cultural degradation, land-grabbing, and armed dispossession. It’s outrageous that we have Indigenous People and even activists coming year after year, you know, doing their best to finance their trouble to be here, to organize side events, and we know that they (UNFCCC) won’t be listening. And we are talking at the time that forests are burning, they are being destroyed, the Amazon, the forests in Congo, the forests in Asia, it’s the end you know, it’s burning. It’s not just a little fire. We are over the tipping point, meaning that maybe we have just a few years. We are talking, the scientists say that we have now like two years to save the Amazon rainforest, and we are still, you know, business as usual. It’s crazy. We come to the United Nations seeking justice and all we see are false solutions like Article 6, where there is carbon trading where our women are not involved in the decision-making. We see the REDD+ program where they are trying to carbon trade there as well, and where they carbon trade in South America in other Indigenous territories. That allows them to pollute my people to death. We are suffering from environmental genocide as a result, of the types of false solutions that they are making. We are enacting in my nation The Rights of Nature because we believe we are not just protectors of nature, we are nature protecting itself and we need to all be aware of that situation and we need to seek balance It’s not about not empowering the men, because we have powerful men in our family, in our nation, in our world, but there has to be a balance re-attained, as creation was originally intended. Rights of Nature can help us find that balance if we can enact those in the laws that human beings are creating, that men are creating. Or else humans are on the way to self-destruction and will be part, of the one million species that disappear. This COP, the 25th, we don’t see any good advancements. So maybe this coming week there’s going to be a little change, but we don’t see that much because even Article [6] around human rights, they are not even trying to, honor the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent of Indigenous Peoples, and we are the ones suffering the most, because we are on the frontlines. We are the ones who are taking care and we are the ones doing most of the work. Because 80% of the biodiversity of the world is in the Indigenous Peoples’ territories. Let’s not take it for granted. It’s a lot of work to do. So we need to act. And the work is now. Artigo 6: Soluções Falsas ISSO É O QUE SE VIA DENTRO DA COP 25, EM DEZEMBRO DE 2019, EM MADRI, ONDE O ARTIGO 6 ESTAVA SENDO NEGOCIADO. O ARTIGO 6 ESTABELECE AS REGRAS PARA UM NOVO SISTEMA GLOBAL DE PRECIFICAÇÃO DO CARBONO. A melhor invenção que já produzimos se chama árvore. Precisamos atribuir um valor à natureza. Então, sim à economia. Sim ao meio ambiente. E não, não existe oposição. Temos que combinar essas duas coisas. ENQUANTO ISSO, OS MAIS IMPACTADOS PELA CRISE CLIMÁTICA FORAM EMPURRADOS PARA FORA… Queremos soluções sustentáveis. Queremos soluções geradas pelas pessoas. Queremos soluções que conectem as pessoas à vida real. Há muita devastação em comunidades em diferentes paisagens do mundo. As pessoas estão morrendo todos os dias, por pecados que não cometeram. E nós estamos aqui para dizer: chega de corrupção com a nossa COP! Queremos que a voz do povo seja ouvida. Queremos soluções justas para o clima. Não queremos mercados de carbono. Queremos soluções geradas pelas pessoas. E é por isso que estamos chamando os nossos governos, a nossa COP, a ouvir a voz do povo. É por isso que estamos aqui. Centenas de ativistas se reuniram para exigir que os países ricos tomem medidas mais drásticas, para enfrentar a crise climática. Eles decidiram que não nos querem lá. Estão retirando as nossas credenciais. Como eles podem fazer isso? Então, o que aconteceu com a sua credencial? Eles não gostaram de eu ter decidido ajudar e aderir A este movimento, e não gostaram do que eu tinha a dizer. Eles retiraram a minha credencial imediatamente e tentaram me colocar para fora. Quem abriu a porta da garagem? A segurança da UNFCCC. Eles estavam com tanto medo que quiseram se livrar de nós o mais rápido possível. Isso é totalmente ridículo. Nós passamos meses e meses tentando obter o credenciamento, tentando planejar as coisas que acontecem aqui dentro, mas eles se recusam a nos ouvir. Eles se recusam a ouvir nossa voz, e isso é simplesmente blasfêmia. Quem está cuidando dessas terras e a biodiversidade são os Povos Indígenas, e protegendo as florestas e a água. Mas nós não estamos sendo ouvidos. Não estamos sendo incluídos nessas conversas, e estão nos colocando em fila para marchar como animais, com a polícia à nossa volta. Nós deveríamos estar lá dentro. O que está acontecendo nessas reuniões é que os governos coloniais estão fazendo acordos, para criar mecanismos de mercado de carbono. Não podemos mercantilizar o nosso ar, e não podemos vender as nossas florestas para empresas, que estão tentando continuar seus negócios como se nada estivesse acontecendo, e criar combustíveis fósseis e extrativismo em nossos quintais, perpetuando ainda mais a marginalização de nossas comunidades indígenas em relação a nossas terras e territórios, e nos roubando nossa autodeterminação e nossa soberania. Esses mecanismos de mercado de carbono e “soluções de mercado” para a crise climática não reduzem as emissões. Em vez disso, o que eles estão fazendo é permitir que empresas sujas continuem seus negócios como se nada estivesse acontecendo, aumentando as emissões anualmente todo dia, e destruindo nossos ecossistemas e terras em todo o mundo. Como a ONU pode fingir ter soluções? Mesmo os países, quando eles nem mesmo ouvem as pessoas da base, as comunidades da base, os povos indígenas? É impossível, entende? Você tem Povos Indígenas em eventos paralelos e ninguém vem para participar dos eventos paralelos. É uma bobagem. Bobagem total. São soluções falsas. Quando dizemos que são soluções falsas, é verdade. Porque estamos falando de finanças. São só negócios, como sempre. Eles só querem ganhar dinheiro. Os mercados de carbono não fizeram nada para desacelerar ou parar as emissões. É ridículo pensar que isso está sendo financiado, usado e retratado pela ONU como solução. É um atraso. É contra a ciência, e é horrível pensar que essas pessoas deveriam ser líderes. É assustador para nós como pessoas, como jovens. Bem-vindos ao quarto dia da COP 25 aqui em Madrid. UM “EVENTO PARALELO” DA COP 25 Estamos aqui esta manhã, gente de diferentes organizações, e estamos aqui para lançar o “Dia de dizer Não aos Mercados de Carbono”. Enviamos uma mensagem em 2015, na assinatura do Acordo de Paris, de que aquilo ia ser um crime contra a humanidade e a Mãe Terra, porque não passava de um instrumento comercial. As compensações de carbono privatizam a Mãe Terra e a natureza, inclusive o ar que nós respiramos, e eles fingem usar os solos, nossas florestas, nossas plantações, nossa agricultura, outros ecossistemas, como esponjas para gases de efeito estufa, em vez de reduzir as emissões. É por isso que estamos preocupados com isso. Viemos do ventre da besta, onde há uma expansão do desenvolvimento de combustíveis fósseis florestais, então a lavagem verde que eles estão usando é essa “solução de mercado”. Basicamente, todos esses termos gerais, como “precificação de carbono” e todos esses sistemas que estão incorporados ao Artigo 6, e vendo como muitas políticas nacionais em todo o mundo [estão] mascarando o fato de que só promovem sistemas antigos, como compensações de carbono e comércio de carbono. Essa perpetuação e o mascaramento desses termos, que na verdade são apenas um conceito antigo que nós sabemos que não funciona. Continua sendo um sistema de falsas soluções que eles acham que nós não entendemos. Mas nós entendemos muito bem o que eles estão fazendo ao reposicionar as mesmas coisas velhas que já não funcionaram. Quando eu estou fazendo meu trabalho diário e tentando trabalhar para empresas para ajudá-las a compensar sua pegada de carbono, eu nem sempre estou lidando com os melhores projetos de carbono, nem os mais interessantes, Às vezes, são coisas que vimos no mercado por muito, muito tempo, e… e… e… as pessoas querem uma alternativa. Se colocassem na frente delas, vocês ficariam surpresos com qual seria a reação a algo que está na sua área. Então essa é uma grande lição disso, colocar em prática e começar a estabelecer o conceito o mais rápido possível. Amanhã eu vou fazer um anúncio muito importante em termos de compensação de emissão de carbono, etc., no qual nós estamos trabalhando com o setor de aviação. Então, estamos agora no modo de ação, ação, ação, fornecendo ferramentas de medição real, Então, quem teria pensado que a ICC (Câmara de Comércio Internacional), que alguém descreveu como a “grande senhora dos negócios” acabaria sendo uma organização com uma atitude viva? É só mais um mecanismo para assumir o controle. Então, em vez de controlar, nós precisamos cuidar. Cuidar da vida. A maioria das florestas e da biodiversidade remanescentes da Terra é protegida por povos indígenas, que têm protegido as florestas e continuarão protegendo por milhares de anos, mas apenas se os programas colonialistas, como os que estão sendo implementados e consagrados no Artigo 6, não interferirem nesse processo. Temos evidências, muitas evidências, que mostram que desde que o Banco Mundial, e a Convenção-Quadro das Nações Unidas sobre Mudança do Clima lançaram os programas de Redução de Emissões por Desmatamento e Degradação Florestal, ou REDD, em 2007, as comunidades sofreram impactos muito intensos. Alguns dos impactos incluem perda de direitos, perda de acesso a uso da floresta, desmatamento, degradação cultural, apropriação de terras e expropriação armada. É escandaloso que tenhamos povos indígenas e até ativistas vindo ano após ano, fazendo o melhor que podem para financiar sua vinda aqui, para organizar eventos paralelos, e sabemos que eles (UNFCCC) não vão ouvir. E estamos falando no momento que as florestas estão queimando, estão sendo destruídas, a Amazônia, as florestas do Congo, as florestas da Ásia, é o fim, entende? Está queimando. Não é só um incendiozinho. Já ultrapassamos o ponto de inflexão, o que significa que talvez tenhamos apenas alguns anos. Estamos conversando, os cientistas dizem que agora temos cerca de dois anos para salvar a floresta amazônica, e nós continuamos como se nada estivesse acontecendo. É uma loucura. Viemos à ONU em busca de justiça e tudo o que vemos são soluções falsas, como o Artigo 6, onde há comércio de carbono, onde nossas mulheres não estão envolvidas nas decisões. Vemos o programa REDD+, onde eles estão tentando fazer comércio de carbono lá também, e onde eles comercializam carbono na América do Sul, em outras Terras Indígenas. Isso permite que eles poluam o meu povo até a morte. Estamos sofrendo um genocídio ambiental como resultado dos tipos de soluções falsas que estão adotando. Estamos promulgando, na minha nação, os Direitos da Natureza, porque acreditamos que não somos apenas protetores da natureza. Nós somos a própria natureza se protegendo, e precisamos estar todos cientes dessa situação e buscar o equilíbrio. Não se trata de não empoderar os homens, porque temos homens poderosos na nossa família, na nossa nação, no nosso mundo, mas temos que recuperar um equilíbrio, como era a intenção original da criação. Os Direitos da Natureza podem nos ajudar a encontrar esse equilíbrio se pudermos inseri-los nas leis que os seres humanos estão criando, que os homens estão criando. Ou então os humanos estarão a caminho da autodestruição e farão parte do um milhão de espécies que desaparecem. Nesta COP, a 25ª, não vemos nenhum bom avanço. Então, talvez na próxima semana haja uma pequena mudança, mas não vemos muito, porque mesmo o Artigo [6] sobre direitos humanos, eles nem estão tentando honrar o Consentimento Livre, Prévio e Informado dos Povos Indígenas, e nós somos os que mais sofrem, porque estamos na linha de frente. Somos nós que cuidamos e fazemos a maior parte do trabalho. Porque 80% da biodiversidade do mundo está nos territórios dos povos indígenas. Não vamos dar isso como garantido. É muito trabalho por fazer. Portanto, precisamos agir. E o trabalho é agora.
