Kick Big Polluters Out at COP27 | Indigenous Environmental Network

To world governments ahead of COP27:

The climate crisis is no longer on our doorsteps; it is here and now. Around the world, we are already experiencing irreversible damage to the planet, and the loss of homelands, cultures, ecosystems, and more – all of this on a daily basis. And it is the communities around the world that have contributed the very least to climate change that are paying the highest price–their lives and livelihoods.

We are living in a climate crisis, not because it was inevitable or unavoidable. Rather, we have witnessed world governments protect Big Polluters’ interests and fail year after year to deliver the needed climate equity and action to end the world’s fossil fuel addiction, and to rapidly and justly transition to a new global system – one that is equitable, socially just, gender responsive, nature-restoring, fossil-fuel-free, and life affirming.

We have witnessed world governments– particularly the U.S., EU, Norway, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand – cause countless delays and obstruct so many opportunities to meaningfully act. They have continued the legacy of racism, patriarchy, extractivism, and colonialism year after year, protecting the greed and profits of Big Polluters that continue to pillage and plunder from frontline communities with impunity.

We know who is to blame for the climate crisis. For over half a century, Big Polluters have known their deadly products would cause tremendous harm. What did they do? They hid the truth, sowed doubt, and invested billions of dollars to delay climate action. All in the name of greed and profits, no matter the cost to people and the planet. Why do you continue to support and enable them every step of the way?

We, the [x] organizations representing [x] people around the world, ask you– what do you stand for? Do you stand for the obscenely greedy, reckless, and deadly business practices of Big Polluters that have driven us to the brink of extinction? Or do you stand for a world where communities can thrive and where we protect and nurture the planet Earth that is our only home?

Ahead of COP27 happening in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022, we demand:

No more writing the rules. Big Polluters must not be granted access to climate policymaking. This allows them to continue to unduly influence, weaken, and undermine the global response to climate change, and it’s why we are on the brink of extinction. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change must urgently establish an Accountability Framework to end this corporate capture. As an immediate next step, beginning with COP27, all participants must be required to publicly disclose and declare their interests. People deserve to know who is at the policymaking table, and what their real agenda is.
No more bankrolling climate action. No Big Polluter partnership or sponsorships of climate talks or climate action. Not now. Not ever. Major polluters must not be allowed to greenwash themselves and literally buy their way out of culpability for a crisis they have caused. Already, two major polluters have been named as COP27 partners- Coca-Cola, the world’s largest plastics polluter and a major political blocker of climate action; and Microsoft, the world’s largest tech partner to the oil and gas industry. The UNFCCC will always fail to deliver so long as this is deemed acceptable.
Polluters Out- People In. While civil society has always participated in the COP process, governments have made it more difficult each time for NGOs and climate justice movements to have their voices heard. We need equitable, meaningful inclusion. Climate action must center the leadership and lived experience of the people, especially those on the frontlines of the climate crisis. With frontline communities in the lead, we must end the funding and validation of dangerous distractions and false solutions that promote Big Polluters’ profits, enable their abuses, and guarantee decades more of fossil fuel use.
Systems change. Capitalism is destroying life as we know it. It’s time to build a new way of living and collaborating that works for people, not polluters, and that restores, rather than destroys, nature. We need real, just, accountable, gender responsive, community-led, nature-restoring, and proven and transformative solutions to be implemented rapidly and justly. We need a total and equitable transition off of fossil fuels. We need real solutions that center the rights of Indigenous peoples, local communities and the protection of those speaking up for justice. We need an end to the impunity of corporate abuses.

COP27 must be a reset of the system. A moment to abandon the old, profiteering, polluting world order, and a time to reimagine and rapidly implement global collaboration that centers equity, justice, science, and humanity. We don’t have to tell you what another failed COP will mean for people and the planet.

Expulsar a los Grandes Contaminadores de la COP27

A los gobiernos del mundo antes de la COP27:

La crisis climática ya no está por llegar; está aquí y ahora. En todo el mundo, ya estamos experimentando daños irreversibles en el planeta y la pérdida de tierras, culturas, ecosistemas y más, todo esto a diario. Y son las comunidades de todo el mundo que menos han contribuido al cambio climático las que están pagando el precio más alto: sus vidas y medios de subsistencia.

Estamos viviendo una crisis climática, no porque era inevitable o ineludible. Más bien, hemos sido testigos de como los gobiernos del mundo protegen los intereses de los Grandes Contaminadores y fallan año tras año en brindar la equidad climática y las acciones necesarias para terminar con la adicción a los combustibles fósiles en el mundo, y para hacer una transición rápida y justa a un nuevo sistema global, uno que sea equitativo, socialmente justo, sensible al género, restaurador de la naturaleza, libre de combustibles fósiles y que afirme la vida.

Hemos sido testigos de que los gobiernos del mundo, en particular los EE. UU., la UE, Noruega, Canadá, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, causan innumerables retrasos y obstruyen tantas oportunidades para actuar de manera significativa. Han continuado con el legado del racismo, el patriarcado, el extractivismo y el colonialismo año tras año, protegiendo la codicia y las ganancias de los Grandes Contaminadores que continúan ultrajando y saqueando impunemente a las comunidades en la primera línea de los impactos climáticos.

Sabemos quién es responsable de la crisis climática. Durante más de medio siglo, los Grandes Contaminadores han sabido que sus productos mortales causarían un daño tremendo. ¿Qué hicieron? Ocultaron la verdad, sembraron dudas e invirtieron miles de millones de dólares para retrasar la acción climática. Todo en nombre de la codicia y las ganancias, sin importar el costo para las personas y el planeta. ¿Por qué continúan apoyándolos y permitiéndoles salirse del camino?

Nosotros, las organizaciones [x] que representan a las personas [x] en todo el mundo, le preguntamos: ¿qué representa? ¿Defiende las prácticas comerciales obscenamente codiciosas, imprudentes y mortales de los Grandes Contaminadores que nos han llevado al borde de la extinción? ¿O defiende un mundo en el que las comunidades puedan prosperar y en el que protejamos y cuidemos el planeta Tierra, que es nuestro único hogar?

Antes de la COP27, que tendrá lugar en Sharm El Sheikh en noviembre de 2022, exigimos:

1. Basta de escribir las reglas. Los Grandes Contaminadores no deben tener acceso a la formulación de políticas climáticas. Esto les permite continuar influenciando, debilitando y socavando indebidamente la respuesta global al cambio climático, y es por eso que estamos al borde de la extinción. La Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático debe establecer urgentemente un Marco de Responsabilidad para poner fin a esta captura corporativa. Como siguiente paso inmediato, a partir de la COP27, se debe exigir a todos los participantes que divulguen y declaren públicamente sus intereses. Los pueblos merecen saber quién está en la mesa de la formulación de políticas y cuál es su verdadera agenda.

2. Basta de financiar la acción climática. Ninguna asociación con los Grandes Contaminadores ni patrocinios de negociaciones climáticas o acción climática. Ni ahora. Ni nunca. No se debe permitir que los principales contaminadores hagan greenwashing y, literalmente, compren su exención de culpabilidad por una crisis que han causado. Ya se han nombrado dos grandes contaminadores como socios de la COP27: Coca-Cola, el mayor contaminador de plásticos del mundo y un importante bloqueador político de la acción climática; y Microsoft, el socio tecnológico más grande del mundo para la industria del petróleo y el gas. La CMNUCC siempre fallará en cumplir mientras se considere aceptable.

3. Los contaminadores, fuera; las personas, dentro. Si bien la sociedad civil siempre ha participado en el proceso de la COP, los gobiernos han hecho cada vez más difícil que las ONG y los movimientos por la justicia climática hagan oír sus voces. Necesitamos una inclusión equitativa y significativa. La acción climática debe ser el centro del liderazgo y de la experiencia vivida de las personas, especialmente para aquellas en la primera línea de la crisis climática. Con las comunidades de primera línea a la cabeza, debemos poner fin a la financiación y validación de distracciones peligrosas y soluciones falsas que promueven las ganancias de los Grandes Contaminadores, permiten sus abusos y garantizan más décadas de uso de combustibles fósiles.

4. Los sistemas cambian. El capitalismo está destruyendo la vida tal como la conocemos. Es hora de construir una nueva forma de vivir y colaborar que funcione para las personas, no para los contaminadores, y que restaure, en lugar de destruir, la naturaleza. Necesitamos soluciones reales, justas, responsables, con perspectiva de género, dirigidas por la comunidad, restauradoras de la naturaleza, comprobadas y transformadoras que se implementen de manera rápida y justa. Necesitamos una transición total y equitativa fuera de los combustibles fósiles. Necesitamos soluciones reales que pongan en el centro los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, las comunidades locales y la protección de quienes defienden la justicia. Necesitamos poner fin a la impunidad de los abusos corporativos.

La COP27 debe ser un reinicio del sistema. Un momento para abandonar el viejo orden mundial, especulador y contaminante, y un momento para reinventar e implementar rápidamente una colaboración global que ponga en el centro la equidad, la justicia, la ciencia y la humanidad. No tenemos que decirle lo que significará otra COP fallida para las personas y el planeta.
